Our Story

Dog Gone Walking was created in 2010 with one simple goal: to provide compassionate, reliable support for pets and their people right here on the Main Line and in Havertown.

The inspiration came from our founder, Ilene Wellner’s personal journey. After being hit by a drunk driver, sitting at a desk was painful but walking with her dogs brought comfort and healing. Friends and neighbors began asking for her help with their pets while they were busy. A tough experience sparked something truly beautiful- a business built on love, healing, and connection with animals. Ilene had always loved animals, especially dogs, but this experience made her realize just how much joy and support pets bring to our lives and how important it is to help pet parents provide that same care.

Ilene started Dog Gone Walking because she saw how much easier life becomes and how much happier pets are when families have trusted, caring professionals to help carry the load. At Dog Gone Walking we prioritize providing the right kind of help for your individual pet so you can do more of what matters without guilt or extra pressure. Whether it’s walking, playtime, or potty breaks, delegating these to us gives your pets more attention, fresh air, exercise, and fun, while freeing you up to live your life fully.

And most importantly, we’ve got your pets-with the same loving care we want for our own.

Ilene carefully selects dog walkers and pet sitters who share her deep passion for animals and their welfare, along with a strong commitment to reliability, safety and kindness.

Ilene Wellner

Founder & Owner

Ilene is a lifelong animal lover and Main Line resident. She has a deep compassion and empathy for people and animals. She founded Dog Gone Walking to support pet parents and pets by reducing stress and inspiring joyful relationships.

Prior to Dog Gone Walking, Ilene worked for many years in the travel and marketing industries in the Philadelphia area. During this season, her passion for animals continued to grow as she supported friends, neighbors, and local rescues by giving her time to care for pets.
Over the years, Ilene has volunteered with local and national rescue organizations. Her impact ranges from advocating on behalf of animals in need to educating pet lovers on important topics such as avoiding puppy mills and the adoption process. She has mentored many families on successfully meeting the needs of their dogs and cats while also expanding her outreach into the greater community.  Through fundraising and organizing events, Ilene has spearheaded efforts to drive awareness and donations for animals in need.

Ilene is a dedicated dog mom who devotes herself profoundly to her dogs. She nurtures their talents and natural skills, whether they are well-suited for specialized work or require gentle care and consistency after a challenging start.

Her late dogs, Luna and Murray, were certified as therapy dogs. Together, they visited schools and libraries, educating children and helping to build their confidence. While she lost Luna and Murray in 2023 when they were both over 16 years old, they remain a treasured part of Dog Gone Walking’s history, having participated in many playgroups during their lives. Their legacy is an impactful reminder of Dog Gone Walking’s core values of providing pets and their people with the best care.

Today, Ilene resides in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, with her husband and their two rescue dogs, George and Gus. Her two children are grown and pursuing careers.

Ilene is passionate about learning and understanding animal behavior, training, and physiology to provide the best care to pets and their families. She has identified the top local walkers and sitters, who share her values on animal welfare and are carefully chosen to keep your pets safe. In addition to managing Dog Gone Walking’s day-to-day operations, Ilene provides daily dog walks. She also plans and oversees playgroups.

When she’s not working, Ilene enjoys staying active in the community- taking fitness classes at the Haverford YMCA, playing pickleball, caring for her native garden, vegan cooking, and always exploring new ways to inspire kindness and compassion.

Life gets busy, but your dog’s need for exercise doesn’t take a day off.
